Wisdom is how much world we can include in the way we live

*Hat tip to Thomas Hübl for this quote.

Wisdom is relational. If we’re in a constant feedback loop with the world, wisdom is a measure of our participation and presence in our lives.

The critic says, “Trust me. I know you so well. I’ve been through this before.” Wisdom says, “Relax into your experience. You can trust yourself to know what to do.” Instead of telling you what might appear to be true, as the critic does, wisdom teaches us how to discover what is really true.

More and more I’m coming to appreciate that our greatest joy and meaning can be found not only by looking inwards, but through active participation.

It’s less the nouns we aspire to (presence, insight, clarity) and more the verbs we choose to inhabit (being, listening, creating).

Surrendering the idea that we need to find something, wisdom invites us to be alive to whatever is. It’s both a scarier and easier place to land. Scarier because it requires courage, easier because we are simply enough.

There is no place to be. I can just be here. And the more here I am, the more of the world I can take in. The more I embrace the world, the wiser my experience.
